BRIDGEWATER – Veteran educator Michael Meyer has been named Principal at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS). Mr. Meyer brings almost 30 years of experience in teaching and school administration to his current role.

Mr. Meyer began his teaching career as an English instructor in the Woodbridge school system. He then assumed Principal duties in middle schools in Hackettstown and Lincoln Park before taking over as the Superintendent of the Lincoln Park school district. According to Mr. Meyer, as he neared the end of his time at Lincoln Park “I was actually on the verge of retiring. And then this opportunity came up to come to work at Vo Tech.” He is looking forward to returning to the Principal role and the opportunity to be able to engage directly with students and staff once again.

While he hasn’t worked in a Career and Technical Education focused school like SCVTHS in the past, Mr. Meyer has already been engaging with students and teachers, learning about their experiences and goals in their classrooms and shops. “I'm eager to get into the classes and really see how they look on a day-to-day basis” he said, adding that as he has been getting to know the school community “it's clear the students are passionate about what they're learning in those classes, and I would really like to see them in action.”

In a recent letter to parents, Mr. Meyer acknowledged the strong foundation that underlies the program at SCVTHS, and his intention to “build on that rather than disrupt it.” He also pledged to listen, learn and lead as he supports students and staff in their work.

When not at school, Mr. Meyer has been spending much of his time training for the Atlantic City Marathon, which he will be running in mid-October with two of his three daughters. When he’s not hitting the pavement, he can be found hitting the trail. Mr. Meyer not only enjoys hiking, often with his dog, but serves as a trail maintainer for the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference. And, when he finally has a moment to sit down, he is an avid reader, working his way through a list developed by PBS of America’s 100 most-loved books.

When asked what his feelings are about his new position as Principal of SCVTHS, Mr. Meyer said “There's so much excitement in coming to a new situation and meeting new students and teachers, who I hope are as excited to have me here as I am to be here. I have a lot of enthusiasm and I'm looking forward to working with everybody - great teachers, parents, and students.”
