BRIDGEWATER –Cosmetology students and instructors at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) have continued a tradition of supporting cancer research.

For over 15 years, students have been raising money for CureSearch for Childhood Cancer Research and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. A portion of the funds comes from cash donations, but most of the money raised are the proceeds from weekly clinics, where students provide the public with a variety of salon services. As a result of the students’ efforts, each organization will receive $500.

The choice of organizations that benefit from the generosity of the SCVTHS community is rooted in the personal experiences of past and present instructors. The mother of a former Cosmetology teacher is a breast cancer survivor, and the donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation is made in her honor. The donation to CureSearch for Childhood Cancer Research is in memory of current Cosmetology instructor Julie Francis’s niece, Mackenzie Wright, who succumbed to cancer at the age of seven.

Mrs. Francis cites Helen Keller’s quote “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” as an inspiration for these, as well as other, fundraising events. The Cosmetology Department will continue their philanthropic efforts in the coming weeks by partnering with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Pediatric Hospital for a Holiday Gift Drive that will provide young patients undergoing treatment with items that will hopefully bring them a little joy.

Please visit https://www.scvths.org/events for information on these and other opportunities to join with SCVTHS students to help our community.
