Young explorers with a curiosity for science and the natural world are invited to participate in the Antarctic Explorers STEP Club, an engaging educational program built on Rutgers University curriculum titled “Data to the Rescue: Penguins Need Our Help!”

Designed for students in grades 4 through 8, this hands-on program introduces participants to the penguins of Palmer Research Station in Antarctica while challenging them to analyze real data to understand how climate change impacts species living in extreme, icy habitats. Through guided activities, students will explore the connection between environmental data, ecosystems, and wildlife survival—bringing abstract science concepts into real-world focus.

One of the highlights of the program is a unique opportunity for students to connect live with polar scientists currently working in Antarctica. During a live video call, participants will ask questions, learn about life and research at the South Pole, and gain firsthand insight into ongoing climate research.

The Antarctic Explorers STEP Club will meet Wednesdays in February 2026 on February 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 4:30–5:30 PM at the Ted Blum 4-H Center. The live video call with Antarctic researchers is scheduled for Saturday, March 7.

This program offers an exciting blend of science, technology, exploration, and problem-solving—ideal for students interested in STEM learning and global environmental issues.
