Kicking Off the New Year With a Closer Look at the “Salty Six”

As the new year begins, many residents are taking a fresh look at their health goals—and one of the most important steps toward better wellness is understanding how much sodium we consume each day. To help the community start 2026 on the right foot, Karen Ensle, EdD, RDN, FAND, CFCS, will be hosting an informative session on Wednesday, January 14 at 12:30 p.m. titled “Beware of the Salty Six for the New Year.”

The program will explore six everyday foods that can quietly contribute high levels of sodium to the average diet. These items are staples in many households, yet they often contain far more salt than people realize. With heart health remaining a top priority nationwide, this conversation is both timely and essential.

According to the American Heart Association, adults should aim for no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, with an ideal limit of 1,500 milligrams for most individuals. Exceeding these levels can increase the risk of high blood pressure and related health concerns—making awareness and education key tools for prevention.

Dr. Ensle’s session will break down where hidden sodium tends to appear, how to read nutrition labels more effectively, and practical strategies for reducing intake without sacrificing flavor. Whether you’re looking to improve your own habits or support healthier choices for your family, this program offers valuable guidance for the year ahead.
