This February, history enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to honor George Washington’s actual birthday by exploring one of New Jersey’s most significant Revolutionary War sites. The Heritage Trail Association, in partnership with Somerset County and the New Jersey Historical Society, is hosting “The Five Generals of Middlebrook” Bus Tour—a deep dive into the winter encampment of 1778–79 and the homes that sheltered Washington and his top officers.

What to Expect
Participants will travel by luxury bus through the Middlebrook area, stopping for brief visits at five surviving Revolutionary War–era houses where Washington and several key generals lived during the encampment. The tour begins with an overview of the 1778–79 winter at the Van Horne House before continuing on a narrated route enhanced by VOX personal listening devices, ensuring every story and detail is easy to hear both on and off the bus.
