The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office has introduced a new HERO law enforcement vehicle in partnership with the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers. While fully equipped for everyday policing, the vehicle carries a powerful public safety reminder: be a HERO—choose a designated driver and help prevent drunk‑driving injuries and fatalities.
Sheriff Darrin Russo shared that the department is proud to support the HERO Campaign’s mission to reduce accidents caused by intoxicated driving and to encourage responsible choices on the road.
The HERO Campaign, founded in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, works nationwide to end drunk‑driving tragedies by promoting the use of safe, sober designated drivers. Elliott, a New Jersey native and recent U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was killed by a drunk driver in July 2000. His family established the campaign to honor his legacy and protect others.
This new HERO vehicle will serve both as a patrol unit and a visible reminder throughout Somerset County that saving lives can start with one simple decision: plan ahead and designate a driver.
