St. John’s Episcopal Church, 158 West High St. in Somerville, invites all to Welcoming Sunday on Sept. 7.
An annual event, this year Welcoming Sunday kicks off a series of events for the 175th Anniversary of Service and Faith to God’s Community in Somerset County.Welcoming Sunday is an opportunity to learn about the many activities and community life at St. John's.
Following both the 8 am and 10:15 am Worship services, a special coffee hour will be held in the Parish Hall, with displays and informational tables on the groups and ministries of St. John’s: Episcopal Church Women; music programs for adults and kids; Meals To Go; Laundry Love; Music Ministry; The Clothes Closet; Church School; and others.
“Welcoming Sunday is a great way to welcome everyone back from summer vacation,” commented the Rev. Canon Ronald Pollock, rector. “We'll be registering Church School students of all ages to our program.”
Mark your calendars for the many anniversary celebration events:Saturday, September 27: St. John’s Flower ShowSaturday, October 4: St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals, a community favorite, at 3 pm in the church.Saturday, October 11: Casino Night – a fun time for all adults 21 and older. Sunday, October 19: Paul Robeson: Songs of Faith and Service.
A special presentation in the church featuring Keith Spencer highlighting Somerville’s own Paul Robeson, the international actor and singer.
Saturday, November 8: St. John’s Anniversary Gala; Noon to 3 pm at the Bridgewater Manor.
Sunday, November 9: The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, IX Bishop of Atlanta, will preach at both the 8 am and 10:15 am services. At 10:15 am, Bishop Alexander will administer the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation.
