New Jersey American Water to Upgrade Parts of Downtown Bernardsville Water System with a $1.5M Infrastructure Project

CAMDEN, N.J. – Jan. 10, 2025 – New Jersey American Water is investing $1.5 million to upgrade critical water infrastructure in Bernardsville, installing approximately 300 feet of new water main to improve service reliability for local customers. This investment is part of the company’s multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure in more than 100 communities statewide. The program focuses on replacing water mains that have reached the end of their useful life to help ensure continued reliability and safety.

Beginning the week of Jan. 12, New Jersey American Water’s local qualified contractor, Boretech & CRJ Contracting, will begin installing the water main, including a bore under the New Jersey Transit railway tracks near the Bernardsville train station and Mt. Airy Road. Construction is expected to be completed by April 2026, with final street restoration scheduled for fall 2026. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on township roads and from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on state roads. No weekend or evening work outside these hours is expected, except for one 24-hour drilling period required during the mid-January boring process. Sections of NJ Transit parking areas will remain closed 24/7 for the duration of the project. Project timelines are subject to change due to weather and the availability of supplies.

Work will take place along the following locations:

• Mine Brook Road (near Bernardsville train station)
• Boylan Terrace
• Area beneath NJ Transit railway tracks (boring location)

“This project represents a major investment in strengthening our system to provide redundancy, resiliency, and to sustain pressures and fire flows to the downtown area of Bernardsville,” said Ian Doyle, construction superintendent of the North Region, New Jersey American Water. “This installation will help us continue to deliver reliable, high‑quality water service while supporting the long‑term needs of the community.”

Traffic control will be coordinated with local authorities. Township roads may be closed to through traffic during work hours, while state and county roads will remain open under managed traffic patterns. Motorists should use caution near work zones, follow posted detours, and expect some noise typical of construction activities. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will have access at all times. Daily site cleanup will occur, and driveway, sidewalk, and landscaping restoration will be completed upon project conclusion.
