NEW LOOP ROADS OPENING THIS SUMMER WILL CHANGE ROUTE 206 / ROUTE 518 TRAFFIC PATTERNS IN MONTGOMERY

Montgomery Township Mayor and Committee are happy to announce the upcoming opening of the long-awaited loop roads. This project is a major milestone in the Township’s effort to improve traffic patterns and ease daily commutes as we look forward to the opening of Montgomery Promenade.

Township staff have been working diligently behind the scenes with the developers to bring this effort to fruition, these loop roads designed to improve traffic flow and relieve congestion at the intersection of Routes 206 and 518. The updates will complete a key component of the Township’s 2002 Master Plan, aimed at improving safety and traffic flow in the town center.

The first loop road, Brecknell Way, opened in April 2024. Three remaining loop roads are expected to open this summer:

  • Village Drive (near Wells Fargo Bank) – estimated opening in late June to early July
  • Nevius Boulevard (Montgomery Promenade) – later this summer
  • Bolmer Corner (Montgomery Promenade) – later this summer

Once the Promenade roads are open, drivers will no longer be able to make left turns directly from Route 206 onto Route 518.

Instead, motorists will use the new loop roads to access Route 518.

New Traffic Patterns to Route 518

The Montgomery Engineering Department has created a map of the new traffic pattern to help motorists visualize the changes before getting on the road (Photo-1).

Traveling Route 206 South, turning toward Hopewell

Drivers wanting to turn right onto Route 518 toward Hopewell have three options:

  • Turn right at Village Drive and continue to the traffic light at Route 518, or
  • Turn right onto Brecknell Way, then right at the stop sign onto Route 518, or
  • Continue to turn right directly onto Route 518 as you would now.

Traveling Route 206 North, turning toward Hopewell

Drivers traveling north on Route 206 will no longer be able to turn left directly onto Route 518. Instead:

  • Turn left onto Nevius Boulevard (across from Benjamin Boulevard), then
  • Continue through the traffic circle, then
  • Turn left onto Route 518 at the traffic light.

If you miss Nevius Boulevard, use Village Drive instead.

Traveling Route 206 South, turning toward Rocky Hill

Drivers traveling south on Route 206 will no longer be able to turn left directly onto Route 518 toward Rocky Hill. Instead:

  • Go past Route 518 and turn right onto Bolmer Corner (off ramp to Route 518).

Alternate routes are Nevius Boulevard and Village Drive.

Right Turns onto Route 518

There is no change for drivers making right turns onto Route 518 from either direction on Route 206.

Public Information and Driver Guidance

The Township will continue sharing updates through the Township website, eBulletins, Nixle text message alerts, social media, and other outreach efforts. Coordination is also being conducted with Somerset County and NJDOT to put out information using their systems. Temporary roadway signage will be installed in advance to help inform drivers, and police officers will assist guiding traffic during the transition.

The Township Engineering Department has coordinated with navigation services including Google Maps and Waze. The Township expects the new roads to be activated in the navigation systems when the roads officially open.

An interactive map has also been created by the Engineering Department to help motorists understand the new traffic patterns before traveling through the area.
