Aashutosh Vyas is crowned the Eisenhower Spelling Bee champion

Aashutosh Vyas did not need to spell out a crucial reason that resulted in this 6th-grade student emerging as the champion of the Eisenhower Intermediate School Spelling Bee.

“I credit my sister, she helped me a lot to prepare,’’ Aashutosh revealed about his sister, Medhavi Vyas, who is a senior at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.

But before he could rely on his preparation and assistance at home, he had to endure two days until the process to declare a champion was completed.

Due to the astute performance of the students who competed, the competition was forced to go to a second day when the final bell to dismiss students at Eisenhower sounded off on Tuesday, January 23.

So Aashutosh and his fellow 6th Grader and finalist, Aditya Baruah, came back to settle the competition on Wednesday, January 24, in front of Deb Ronning, who coordinated the event with her associate and judge, Barbara Schaffer, a 5th Grade Teacher.

The third staffer who served as a judge during the competition on January 23 was Leigh Rousseau, a 6th-grade English Language Arts Teacher.

“We were incredibly impressed with the preparation of the contestants,’’ Ms. Ronning, who is a 5th Grade English Language Arts Teacher as well as the Advisor to the Eisenhower Newspaper Club and Co-Advisor to the Student Council, said.

Also in the mix to win the championship was Kathy Li, who placed third and was the highest finisher for the 5th Grade.

Aashutosh is now eligible to join the winners from throughout Somerset County schools to compete in the eighth annual Spelling Bee Spectacular which is sponsored by the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which holds annual spelling bee competitions in the United States.

This Somerset County championship will be held Friday, March 1, and it will be a virtual event.

Just enough time for Aashutosh to study more with his sister.
