RideWise, the transportation advocacy organization located in Somerville, has refurbished bicycles available for adults needing transportation to work, job interviews, or job training through the agency's BikeConnect program.
Any Somerset County-based nonprofit organization can refer adults 18 years and older to RideWise by completing an application online at www.ridewise.org.
The BikeConnect program is a partnership between RideWise and Pop's Bike Shop in Somerville. RideWise solicits bicycle donations and pays for the repairs. The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority and the Federal Highway Administration fund the program.
"Donated bikes are inspected, cleaned, and repaired by Pop's Bike Shop. Bicycles come with a helmet, bell, lights, and a lock, and clients receive a short session on riding safely.
Since July 2021, 120 clients have been referred to the BikeConnect program by local nonprofit organizations, and 82 qualified to receive a bicycle.
Pop's Bike Shop is a local family-owned business with locations in Bound Brook and Somerville. Owner Marc Cianfrone has managed various bicycle shops in the area since 1984.
