As we step into 2026, the North Branch Volunteer Fire Department is introducing its newly elected leadership team to the community. Kicking off the announcements is the department’s top role: Chief of the Department.

North Branch proudly shares that Zois Pournaras has been re‑elected to serve as Chief for a second consecutive year.

Chief Pournaras oversees the department’s day‑to‑day fireground operations, with all line officers reporting through him. His responsibilities also include managing equipment and apparatus readiness, coordinating with local government agencies, and working closely with mutual aid partners to ensure seamless emergency response across the region.

In addition, Chief Pournaras oversees firefighter certifications, ensuring every member meets the standards set by NFPA and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety—a critical component of maintaining safety and operational excellence.

A member of the department since 2012, Zois has served in multiple leadership roles, including Treasurer, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. His long-standing dedication and experience continue to strengthen both the department and the community it serves.

At Raritan Neighbors NJ, we are proud to highlight the individuals who help keep our community safe—always independently and never compensated.
