New Jersey Envirothon Prepares Students to Tackle Real‑World Environmental Challenges

New Jersey’s next generation of environmental leaders is already hard at work. The New Jersey Envirothon Committee has announced the 2026 New Jersey Envirothon, scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026. Each year, this statewide competition brings together high school teams who share a passion for conservation, science, and hands‑on problem‑solving.

The theme for 2026, “Non‑point Source Pollution: It begins at home!”, invites students to look closely at how everyday choices—from lawn care to household chemicals—affect the health of our watersheds. It’s a timely topic, especially as communities across New Jersey continue to address stormwater runoff, water quality, and the impacts of development.

Throughout the event, students rotate through stations focused on soil, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current‑issue challenge tied to the year’s theme. These stations are led by environmental professionals who volunteer their time to teach, mentor, and inspire. For many students, the Envirothon becomes their first real connection to careers in conservation, natural resources, and environmental science.

Top‑scoring teams earn scholarships, recognition, and the opportunity to represent New Jersey at the 2026 NCF‑Envirothon, hosted at Mississippi State University. But beyond awards, the experience itself is what stays with participants—collaboration, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the natural systems that sustain our communities.

Registration is now open at www.njenvirothon.org, where teachers and advisors can find details on forming teams, preparing for the competition, and accessing study materials.
