BRRSD Security Update To Families Via Email 2/1/2022

Dear Parents/Guardians:

A new law, P.L. 2021, c.365, has gone into effect that requires school districts to notify students, staff, and parents when a school security drill is conducted during the school day. The school administration will notify students and staff at the end of the drill that it was a drill and no danger existed. As parents/guardians, you will also receive an email notification from the school going forward. Each time we conduct a security drill, you will receive an email notification that day to let you know that a drill was conducted. We will only use the urgent notification features of School Messenger, including text and phone notifications, if there is a true emergency or if an alarm goes off that was not planned.

Security drills are required once per month during the school year. Types of security drills include lockdown, shelter-in-place, evacuation, hold in classrooms, or lockout/secure based on the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) used in Somerset County.

Security drills are in addition to fire drills, which are also required once per month. Both types of drills are important so that our students and staff are ready to react in a true emergency. The safety of everyone in our school buildings is of the utmost importance and we will continue to be proactive in planning and conducting these drills to prepare us in the event of a true emergency. As the new law pertains specifically to security drills, the email notifications will only be sent when a security drill has been conducted that day.

Sincerely,

Michael Voorhees
