Senior Wellness Center Calendar of Events - Basking Ridge, NJ

Computer Lab – Available daily. Participants are invited to use computers at their leisure.

Coffee/Tea Social – Mondays, 3 – 4 p.m. This is an opportunity for our community to visit the center to connect, enjoy one another and to learn about center programming opportunities.

Mahjong Club – Mondays & Wednesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. & Fridays, 9:30 a.m. Mahjong is a great game to keep your brain sharp and supercharged. This club is for anyone who loves the game, wants to meet new people, and have some fun. This is not a competitive club. Join fellow center members to play this thought-provoking game. Club size is limited, and registration for one time frame is required. For more information, please call (908) 204-3435.

Stronger Seniors: Core Strength – Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. & Thursdays, 10 a.m.
This pre-recorded exercise program utilizes resistance bands to give you a safe and easy workout for your core muscles. Feel free to bring your own band.

Project Healthy Bones – Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. (January 20 – June 30). Project Healthy Bones (PHB) is a peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who are either at risk of osteoporosis or have it. Exercises focus on improving balance, strength, flexibility, and posture. Advanced registration is required. A doctor’s note is also required before the first class and then once every year. Canasta Club – Tuesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Canasta is a traditional card game that involves grouping your cards to outscore your opponent or the opposing team. New members are always welcome.

Take Control with Exercise – Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1 – 2 p.m. This is an ongoing exercise program, in video form, for all skill levels that can be practiced while either standing or sitting. This program will strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina.

Bridge Group – Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain to keep it alert and helps your memory stay active. New members and beginners are always welcome.

Timeless Planners with Suzanne – Wednesdays, 2 – 3 p.m. All are welcome to participate in this club. The goal for this club is to hear what ideas, programs, or topics of presentations you all would like to see on the activity calendar in the future.

Line Dancing with David Cross – Thursdays, 11 a.m. Line Dancing is a perfect exercise for those wanting to improve their coordination and balance. Exercise your body and your memory.

Stronger Seniors: Stretch – Fridays, 10 a.m. Stretch your muscles and loosen your joints with this wonderful, pre-recorded program. You can remain seated while stretching your whole body. You’ll feel such a difference in just 45 minutes.

Colorful Memories Studios with Mindy – Fridays, 2 – 3 p.m.
Coloring activities relieve stress, encourage creativity, and enhance focus. After a long week join us for this mindful activity that will kick off by decorating the home delivered meal bags that go out to our home bound seniors who utilize Home Delivered Meals led by center client and volunteer, Mindy. All are welcome to participate, supplies provided.

January 5, 11 a.m. – Benefits of Alternative Therapies in Dementia Care with Mallory Dubuisson from Atlantic Health Care. Explore non-drug approaches to dementia care that focuses on easing symptoms like sleep problems, anxiety, and agitation. We all also discuss several versions of evidence-based therapies that may be utilized.

January 6, 11 a.m. – Birds of the World by Somerset Parks with Ben Barkley. There are over 10,000 species of birds in the world, each one is more unexplainable than the next. This one-hour lecture highlights the wackiest, funniest, and most bizarre species from around the globe.

January 7, 11 a.m. – January Trivia with Roberto. Join us for trivia that will cover several categories including history, science, and pop-culture all are welcome to participate.

January 8, 11 a.m. – Winter Craft with Leslie Sponsored By Arbor Terrace Assisted Living. Create a decorative snowflake and personalize it utilizing colored glitter. This activity will encourage social interaction while fostering creativity for a fun craft. All are welcome, pre-registration is required to ensure enough materials for all.

January 9, 11 a.m. – Music Memories for Seniors by Andrew Lobby. Andrew is a talented singer and guitarist known for performing primarily in the folk-rock and light rock genres. His focus is from the 1960s & 1970s.

January 12, 11 a.m. – Heart Healthy Living with Tara Tamino from Bernards Township Health Department. February is Heart Health Awareness Month, and this program will aim to educate participants on the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining cardiovascular health. Learn about nutrient-rich foods, reducing saturated and trans fats, limiting sodium intake and incorporating enough vegetables and fruits.

January 13, 11a.m. - Golden Aces Club. Join us for Rummy, Go Fish, Solitaire and more this program offers a friendly environment to improve card playing skills, make new friends, and participate in friendly competitions. Suitable for all skill levels and will provide both entertainment and social connection in a fun setting.

January 14, 11 a.m. – Fraud Seminar with Antonella Celli from Kearny Bank. This program will provide information that will assist you with recognizing scams, fraud, and will assist with learning practical strategies to stay informed.

January 15, 11 a.m. – Legacy of Justice MLK with Roberto. This program will provide insight into the legacy Martin Luther King Jr. left behind. Including, but not limited to, his life’s work ending segregation and being at the front of the Civil Rights Movement.

January 16, 11 a.m. – Jazz Guitar Performance with Leon Neal. Leon is a soulful, multi-talented jazz guitarist and audio engineer. He will play hits from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and sharing his mantra of music of “Creating Beyond the Notes.”

January 20, 11 a.m. – Somerset County Traveling Library with Noah Anderson. Are you curious about library offerings or maybe would you like to sign up for a library card? Join Somerset County staff to sign up for a library card, get help troubleshooting technology, check out a book, share a recent book you’ve read or a favorite.

January 21, 11 a.m. – Disaster Preparedness with Logan from the American Red Cross. This presentation will cover hurricane and tornado safety, winter storm preparedness, earthquake readiness and other emergencies that you may experience. The program will also discuss the importance of a “get-up and go bag.” You never know when an emergency will strike, best to be prepared for when it does.

January 22, 11 a.m. – Elder Abuse with The New Jersey Prosecutors Office. This comprehensive, educational initiative is designed to raise awareness and empower residents to recognize, prevent, and report abuse. It includes informational materials, support resources, and how to seek help. The program will also offer guidance for caregivers and family members to promote respectful and safe environments for seniors, fostering community vigilance and care to protect our vulnerable populations.

January 23 & 30, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Roberto. Bingo is more than an exciting activity. Researchers have found that engaging in Bingo has multiple health benefits such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, listening, and short-term memory.

January 26, 11 a.m. – Meditation Series with Christina Flanagan-Bistis, sponsored by: Avalon Assisted Living. Join us for a workshop series that will cover aromatherapy, breathwork, guided visualization and sound healing meditation. All are welcome to participate, learn and relax.

January 27, 11 a.m. – Financial Literacy with Liam Gilroy from Thoroughbred Advisors. This program is designed to empower older adults with essential knowledge and skills to manage their finances confidently and securely.

January 28, 11 a.m. – Live Well, Age Well with Kathleen Jadoc. Join Kathleen, a retired Nurse, for a workshop that promotes healthy aging through physical health. Kathleen will provide you with gentle exercises, nutritional guidance tailored for this population, tips for reducing stress, mental health support and overall mindfulness.

January 29, 11 a.m. – Table Games with Connie. Join us for an afternoon of excitement and friendly competition of table games with center Volunteer, Connie. Table Games have numerous health benefits by enhancing hand-eye coordination and mobility they also sharpen cognitive skills through gameplay and connecting with others.
