This weekend the annual John Basilone Parade was canceled due to the severe and unpredictable weather. There were still events happening in honor of our local hero.
Here's a quick snapshot of things you may have missed. Officers ran from the Somerset County Sheriff's Officers participated in the Manila Madness 5K as well for the Basilone Memorial Foundation with all race proceeds benefiting the Steeplechase Cancer Center and the Fischer House Foundation for Veterans.
The Catholic Church of St. Ann's in Raritan still held a church mass and ceremony ( photos property of the John Basilone Parade Committee social media - photographer not listed)
Councilman Adam S. Armahizer and Councilman Pablo Orozco both honored veterans in their own rights, both attended John Basilone programs with their families. Councilman Pablo Orozco, commented on social media, "Last night I had the pleasure of meeting Grand Marshal Archie Fagan. His story is nothing short of inspiring. He spoke about his experiences in WWII. He fought against true evil. He was part of a unit that liberated a concentration camp. He attended the Nuremberg trials. He shared his wisdom that he has earned over 97 years. Thank you Mr. Fagan for your life of service. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. Thank you to the John Basilone Parade Committee for putting together this dinner to honor my hero John Basilone and all veterans that have served our great country"
