A mural by Ji Yong Kim, Assistant Professor in Raritan Valley Community College’s Arts & Design department, was recently installed at the Chinese-American Planning Council’s (CPC) headquarters in New York City. The mural was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the CPC’s new headquarters, located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Titled “Unity in Diversity: The Spirit of CPC One,” the mural was initially painted on Polytab fabric by seniors and student members of the Chinese-American Planning Council community and was then brought to Professor Kim’s studio for completion. RVCC Arts & Design graduate Sarah Switlyk also assisted in painting images of local foods depicted in the mural.

Describing the work, Professor Kim says, “the west wall showcases various services provided by CPC, including mental health support, senior activities, a food pantry, leadership education, and immigration guidance. The north wall features iconic buildings, views, and culturally specific games and activities from the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. As seen in the pictures, the mural is installed in the waiting area of CPC’s new headquarters, where visitors can learn about the history of CPC and the local community.”

The mural, which celebrates the diverse Chinese community, showcases the various languages spoken and the types of food enjoyed by community members. It also reflects CPC's core values and the activities offered by its centers.
