Governor Murphy Signs Bill Restoring Cursive Writing in New Jersey Schools

Cursive writing is making a comeback in New Jersey classrooms. Governor Phil Murphy has signed new legislation requiring public schools to once again teach students how to read and write in cursive, a skill that had gradually faded from many curricula over the past decade.

Supporters of the measure say cursive remains an important foundational tool—helping students develop fine motor skills, improve reading comprehension, and gain the ability to read historical documents in their original form. The new requirement ensures that students will be introduced to cursive instruction in elementary school, with districts given flexibility in how they implement the lessons.

Educators across the state are now preparing to reintroduce handwriting practice, blending traditional pen‑and‑paper exercises with modern classroom approaches.
