Somerset County has officially renamed its Office of Juvenile Institutional Services to the Office of Youth Justice, reflecting a shift toward language and practices that emphasize dignity, growth, and restorative support for young people.
“This renaming recognizes that the term ‘juvenile,’ long rooted in legal classification, often carries unintended stigma and fails to fully reflect the humanity, promise, and individuality of the young people we serve,” said Mollie Greene, Director of the Department of Human Services. “Somerset County chooses language that uplifts and promotes restorative systems, and policies that demonstrate our faith in the power of young people to grow, to heal, and to thrive. The name change reflects our shared belief in second chances and of our enduring commitment to seeing youth not for the worst moment of their lives, but for the future they are capable of building.”
