RVCC to Hold Event on Future of Opticianry
Raritan Valley Community College’s Ophthalmic Science program will host a public presentation titled “Dream Big, One Year Later: The Future of Opticianry in Action,” Thursday, February 12, at 11:30 a.m. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Atrium at the College’s Branchburg campus. The Ophthalmic Science program is part of RVCC’s Health Science Education department.
The presentation will feature David Friedfeld, owner of ClearVision Optical and a nationally recognized leader in the optical industry. Friedfeld will share insights on how opticianry is evolving amid advances in technology, changes in healthcare delivery, and shifting consumer expectations.
Opticianry is a centuries-old profession in the United States, dating back more than 250 years to Benjamin Franklin’s invention of the bifocal lens. Over time, opticians have played a critical role in eye care, from dispensing complex eyewear to supporting patient outcomes across a wide range of practice settings. Today, the profession continues to adapt to new technologies, expanded care models, and emerging opportunities.
During this one-hour presentation and interactive discussion, Friedfeld will explore topics such as the future role of opticians, innovation within the profession, and how opticianry may continue to develop over the next several decades.
The event reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and professional education. Raritan Valley Community College offers two opticianry programs: an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Ophthalmics and an Ophthalmic Science Certificate – Apprenticeship Option.
