SOMERVILLE, N.J. – Daniel Matthews, age 45, of Brooklyn, New York, who was convicted
by a jury in March of First-Degree Murder in the death of Artis Timothy Young of Franklin
Township, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison, 85 percent to be
served without eligibility for parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act.
On Monday, March 3, 2025, after a two-week trial, a Somerset County jury convicted Matthews
of several charges including First Degree Murder in connection with the December 29, 2023,
homicide of Franklin Township resident, Artis Timothy Young. Evidence showed Young, age
46, was murdered at Matthews’ family residence in Franklin Township during a robbery that
involved a large quantity of marijuana.
On Thursday, April 24, 2025, Matthews appeared for sentencing before the Honorable Angela F.
Borkowski, J.S.C. Judge Borkowski sentenced Matthews to 50 years in State Prison, with a
parole ineligibility period of 42.5 years – pursuant to the No Early Release Act – on the first-
degree murder charge. He was also sentenced on the other charges of which he was convicted
which are to run concurrent to the 50-year sentence.
On Saturday, December 30, 2023, Franklin Township Police Department received a missing
person report from a family member regarding Artis Young. An investigation into the
whereabouts of Mr. Young determined that Artis Young had plans to meet with Daniel Matthews
in Franklin Township on December 29, 2023.
During the early morning hours of Saturday, December 30, 2023, Artis Young was found
deceased in Brooklyn, New York. An autopsy was conducted by the New York City Medical
Examiner’s Office which ruled the cause and manner of Artis Young’s death as homicide by
ligature strangulation. As a result of this investigation, Andrew Mumby and Daniel Matthews
were identified as suspects in the death of Artis Young. Following the homicide, Matthews and
Mumby transported Young’s remains in the trunk of Young’s own vehicle to the location in
Brooklyn, New York where Young’s body was discovered. Surveillance video showed both men
at multiple locations with the victim’s car in the 12 hours after the homicide with Matthews often
in possession of cleaning supplies for the car. Matthews’ cellphone placed him at the scene of
the killing, the disposal of the body, and the abandonment of the victim’s car.
Forensics evidence was recovered placing the victim’s blood and DNA in the trunk of his car, on
the floor of the garage at the Matthews family residence in Franklin Township, and on the
sweatsuit Matthews was wearing on the surveillance video in the case. Matthews’ own DNA
was also found on that sweatsuit with the victim’s blood. A witness testified that the homicide
occurred during a robbery connected with a large quantity of marijuana that evening. Andrew
Mumby has pled guilty to participating in the crime.
Matthews was convicted by the jury of First-Degree Murder, First Degree Robbery, Second
Degree Conspiracy to Disturb Human Remains, Second Degree Disturbing Human Remains, and
two counts of Third-Degree Hindering Apprehension. The two-week trial was held before Judge
Borkowski and was presented by Somerset County Assistant Prosecutors William A. Guhl and
Terence Ford with the assistance of paralegals Amy Vandergoot and Tiffany Gordon. The
investigation was conducted by the Franklin Township Police Department, the Somerset County
Prosecutor’s Office, and the New York City Police Department, with assistance from the New
Jersey State Police and the FBI.
