Somerset County's Department of Human Services launched an innovative new program, hiring two specialized navigators to help empower individuals and families by providing the tools, resources, and support needed to transition from food assistance to long-term self-sufficiency.

“My fellow Commissioners and I are committed to meeting people where they are to provide the services they need, and today’s tour of our food pantry partners was a chance to see that commitment in action,” said Commissioner Doug Singleterry. “Last year our partners told us that their clients often could benefit from other services but are often unaware of or unable to access them. To meet these needs, Somerset County created the Human Services Navigator program where we embed social workers who not only have extensive knowledge of available resources, but also empathy and compassion.”

"I’ve seen firsthand how spending quality time with neighbors accessing our food banks—helping them contact resources beyond food—can be transformative. Navigating services can feel overwhelming to many, especially those in crisis, but it’s an honor to bridge that gap and support people on their path to self-sufficiency.”

"Every day, I connect our neighbors with essential resources, from affordable housing applications to employment services, knowing that these connections can be life changing.”
